Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) is a special instance of ePrescribing that provides pharmacies, hospitals, and practitioners a mechanism to use technology for controlled substance prescriptions. ePrescribing replaces the paper, fax, email, and phone processes for placing prescription orders. For states that have enacted EPCS legislation, ePrescribing is a mandate. While the types of prescriptions that require electronic transmission vary from state to state, PointClickCare offers a comprehensive solution to support your EPCS needs. Practitioner Initiated ePrescribing When a practitioner is meeting with a resident, the creation of an order electronically starts a new medication or treatment. Using the Orders functionality of the EHR, a practitioner can initiate and enter the order into the system. At the time of prescribing, the practitioner can review the order to evaluate appropriateness and determine whether there are any potential clinical interactions. Once satisfied, the practitioner can then electronically sign the order. At this point, the EHR eMAR Portal alerts the nurse of the new order for review. The nurse can review and confirm the order, and the medication is now available on the eMAR / eTAR. Once verified, the order transmits to the pharmacy for fulfillment using Integrated Medication Management (IMM). A practitioner who is off-site can also create a new order on the Practitioner Engagement mobile application. Order templates automatically populate order fields such as the schedule and present any clinical interaction warnings. The practitioner can then electronically sign the order all within the application. Solution Spotlight ———————— ———————— Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) ———————— ————————
